Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost?
My current rates are:
$150 per 50 min hour for Counselling
175 per 50 min hour for Professional Coaching
How do I pay?
You can pay by cash, cheque or e-transfer.
Are your services covered by my benefits?
Most likely. You'll want to check to see if your benefit plan covers social workers or psychotherapists. Look for MSW, RSW (Masters of Social Work, Registered Social Worker).
Will you invoice my insurance company directly?
I will make it as easy for you as possible, but I don't invoice directly.
After each session I will issue you an invoice with my registration number that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. If you don't have coverage, you can hang onto your invoices as counselling provided by a Registered Social Worker (RSW) can be claimed as medical expense when filing your income tax returns.
Do you offer a sliding scale?
I dream of the day that counselling is covered by OHIP and everyone has free access. I don't currently offer a sliding scale. If you're stuck, shoot me an email and we can talk about alternative options.
What can I expect in my first session?
To start we will have some paperwork and housekeeping to get out of the way. Then we will move into discussing what had you seek services at this time and what you hope to get out if it. You'll have an opportunity to get to know me, I'll have a chance to get to know you and we'll figure out together what our work will look like.
How many sessions will I need?
That's a hard question to answer because everyone is a little different.
For example, research (and my experience) shows that people who are seeking CBT treatment for depression tend to start feeling better in 10-12 sessions, while anxiety tends to respond a bit quicker. We can talk this through in your first session and come with a plan that works best for you.
Will you be a good fit for me?
I hope so!
The relationship between you and your therapist or coach is very important and has been shown to significantly impact the outcomes of your work. I will work hard to earn trust with you and help you feel comfortable talking about things you may not have shared before. Feel free to ask me any questions in advance of booking your first session.
What is your cancellation policy?
I ask that you give me at least 24 hours notice that you'll be unable to keep your appointment to avoid being charged. I am happy to reschedule and this allows me to offer the time to another client. That said, life happens. Contact me as soon as you can if you have extenuating circumstances.
Do you offer your services online?
Absolutely! There are a lot of reasons why online counselling or coaching might be a better fit for you than traditional face-to-face conversation. I offer my services online through Zoom which is very user friendly. Best of all, its got lots of security to keep our conversations confidential.
** EMDR being the exception. This is best done in person **
What's the difference between therapy and coaching?
The difference is signficant!
All healthy human beings are wired to be vigilant to potential threats, dangers or pitfalls (...it is, afterall, what helps us to survive!) And this survival mechanism means that we will all also have a inner stream of thoughts that create feelings of criticism, doubt and fear. Again, these thoughts and feelings are not cause for alarm, but they can start to become problematic when we get emotionally hooked leading us to rigid thining (believing that our thoughts are *facts* ) or habitual, instead of intentional, behaviour (avoidance of percieved threat).
One of the distinguishing factors between therapy and coaching is frequency, severity and duration of being emotionally hooked.
Therapy works to address trauma or an environmental context that created these inflexible neural pathways. Together, we will use evidence-based modalities to change the way you respond -cognitively, emotionallly and behaviourally- to present day situations.
Coaching, armed with its own set of industry tools, continues to move the work further down the continnuum of wellness by increasing your emotional intelligence and psychological flexibility. In coaching we approach your inner experience in a more mindful, value driven manner to help you achieve outcomes that bring greater success and fulfillment.
Where as therapy helps to cultivate a sense of mental wellness, coaching creates psychological thriving.
What's changed with COVID-19?
As of March 16, 2020, all of my services have been moved online until further notice. I am using a secure, user-friendly platform for online counselling. Simply click the link I send you to be taken to my virtual waiting room to begin our session. Or you can opt to connect via telephone if you are more comfortable with that.
I am still accepting new clients, though there may be a waitlist at times.
